Day 4 1 Sep - Plitvice National Park near Zagreb

Journey south

This morning set off in a minibus to drive 98 miles out from Zagreb to the Plitvice National Park. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its chain of turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, and lush woodlands teeming with wildlife.

The roads out of the city were quite busy with rush hour traffic, but once out of the city we joined a toll road to head south and the traffic was much lighter. We travelled through farmland in the first half of the journey, that looked quite like the UK, all be it greener than the UK at the moment. The second half of the journey was on more local twisty roads, and through much more undulating and forested landscape.

The park is massive and has several different length trails to follow. We explored the park by boat and on foot, following well-marked walking trails, many of which were wooden boardwalks suspended just above the water. Around every corner, you encounter waterfalls and amazing views that give the park a fairytale feel. The lakes are all natural and are an incredible blue colour.

After a picnic lunch in the park, we did the return drive back to Zagreb.

Tomorrow we have a long day as we travel from Croatia, across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina.
